Diocese of Oeiras-Floriano Split

The Diocese of Oeiras-Floriano, Piaui, Brazil was split into the Dioceses of Oeiras and Floriano.

Bishop Augusto Alves da Rocha who had been the ordinary of the original diocese now becomes the Bishop of Floriano.

Bishop-elect Juarez Sousa Da Silva was named the Bishop of Oeiras.

Mengeling retired, Boyea named Lansing Bishop

Bishop Carl Frederick Mengeling retired and Bishop Earl Alfred Boyea, Jr. was named Bishop of Lansing, Michigan, USA. Bishop Boyea had been serving as an Auxiliary Bishop of Detroit.

Hernández Rodríguez named Orizaba Bishop

Bishop Marcelino Hernández Rodríguez was named Bishop of Orizaba, México. The diocese had been vacant since April 2007 when then-Bishop Hipólito Reyes Larios was named Archbishop of Jalapa (Xalapa). Bishop Hernández Rodríguez had been serving as an Auxiliary Bishop of México.

Archbishop-elect Luciano Suriani was named Apostolic Nuncio to Bolivia and titular archbishop of Amiternum. The post had been vacant since Archbishop Ivo Scapolo was named Apostolic Nuncio to Rwanda last month.

Leanza named Ireland Nuncio

Archbishop Giuseppe Leanza was named Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland. The post had been vacant since Archbishop Giuseppe Lazzarotto was named Apostolic Nuncio to Australia in December 2007. Archbishop Leanza had been serving as Apostolic Nuncio to Bulgaria.

Herriot resigned, Giraud succeeded as Soissons Bishop

Bishop Marcel Paul Herriot resigned and Bishop Hervé Jean Robert Giraud succeeded as Bishop of Soissons (, Laon, e Saint-Quentin), France. Bishop Giraud had been serving as Coadjutor of the same diocese.

Bishop Carrière Died

Bishop Paul-Louis Carrière, Bishop Emeritus of Laval, France, has died. He was 99 years old and had served as a priest for 76 years and as a bishop for 39 years. May he rest in peace.

Archbishop Kelvin Edward Felix retired and Archbishop Robert Rivas, O.P. succeeded as Archbishop of Castries, Saint Lucia, Antilles. Archbishop Rivas had been serving as Coadjutor Archbishop of the same archdiocese.

Slovakia (Latin Rite) Reorganization

Following the reorganization of the Byzantine rite jurisdictions of Slovakia a fortnight ago, today the Latin rite jurisdictions were adjusted as follows:

The Archdiocese of Bratislava-Trnava was split into the Archdiocese of Bratislava (which becomes the Metropolitan) and the Archdiocese of Trnava. The ordinaries are Archbishop-designate Stanislav Zvolenský and Archbishop Ján Sokol, respectively.

The new Diocese of Žilina was created with territory taken from Banská Bystrica and Nitra with Bishop Tomáš Gális as its first ordinary.

Cassari named Croatia Nuncio

Archbishop Mario Roberto Cassari was named Apostolic Nuncio to Croatia. The post had been vacant since Archbishop Francisco-Javier Lozano was named Apostolic Nuncio to Romania in December 2007. Archbishop Cassari had been serving as Apostolic Nuncio to Côte d’Ivoire.

Bishop Rafael Ramón Conde Alfonzo was named Bishop of Maracay, Venezuela. The diocese had been vacant since then-Bishop Reinaldo del Prette Lissot was named Archbishop of Valencia in April 2007. Bishop Conde Alfonzo had been serving as Bishop of Margarita.
