Cardinal Saldarini Died

Giovanni Cardinal Saldarini, Archbishop Emeritus of Torino {Turin}, Italy, has died.

He was 86 years old and had served as a priest for 63 years. He had also served as a bishop for 26 years and as a cardinal for 19 years.

May he rest in peace.

Cepeda Escobedo named Detroit Auxiliary

Bishop-elect José Arturo Cepeda Escobedo was named Auxiliary Bishop of Detroit, Michigan, USA and titular bishop of Tagase.

He was born in Mexico and had been serving as a priest in the Archdiocese of San Antonio, Texas.

He will be the youngest USA bishop when consecrated on 5 May, just 10 days before he turns 42. He will be the 9th youngest bishop worldwide.

The Archdiocese of Malanje, Angola was elevated from a diocese of the same name. Archbishop-designate Luis María Pérez de Onraita Aguirre was named its first Archbishop.

He had been serving as Bishop of the same diocese.

Saurimo, Angola elevated to Archdiocese, Imbamba named Archbishop

The Archdiocese of Saurimo, Angola was elevated from a diocese of the same name. Archbishop-designate José Manuel Imbamba was named its first Archbishop.

The diocese had been vacant since Bishop Eugenio Dal Corso, P.S.D.P. was named Bishop of Benguela in February 2008.

Archbishop-designate Imbamba had been serving as Bishop of Dundo.

Cardinal Vithayathil Died

Varkey Cardinal Vithayathil, C.SS.R., Major Archbishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly (Syro-Malabarese), India, has died.

He was 83 years old and had served as a priest for 56 years. He had also served as a bishop for 14 and as a cardinal for 10 years.

May he rest in peace.

Bishop-elect Peter Holiday was named Bishop of Kroonstad, South Africa.

The diocese had been vacant since then-Bishop Stephen Brislin was named Archbishop of Cape Town {Kaapstad} in December 2009.
