The post had been vacant since Archbishop Fortunato Baldelli was named Major Penitentiary of the Apostolic Penitentiary in June 2009.

Archbishop Ventura had been serving as Apostolic Nuncio to Canada.

Bishop Manzella had been serving as Bishop of Caltagirone.

Bishop Jacinto Inácio Flach was named Bishop of Criciúma, Santa Catarina, Brazil.

The diocese had been vacant since Bishop Paulo Antônio de Conto was named Bishop of Montenegro, Rio Grande do Sul in July 2008.

Bishop Flach had been serving as Auxiliary Bishop of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul.

Pope Benedict XVI's consecrations

Before today, Pope Benedict XVI had consecrated 10 bishops: four before he became pope and 6 after.

Today he added 5 more to the list: Archbishops Gabriele Giordano Caccia, Franco Coppola, and Pietro Parolin along with Bishops Raffaello Martinelli and Giorgio Corbellini.
