The Prefecture Apostolic of Gambella, Ethiopia was elevated to a Vicariate Apostolic, retaing the same name and boundaries.

Bishop-elect Angelo Moreschi, S.D.B. was named its first Vicar Apostolic and titular bishop of Elephantaris in Mauretania.
