Archbishop Sambi Died

Archbishop Pietro Sambi, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States of America, has died.

He turned 73 years old one month ago. He served as a priest for 47 years and as a bishop for 25 years.

May he rest in peace.

Archbishop André Gaumond retired and Archbishop-designate Luc Cyr was named Archbishop of Sherbrooke, Québec, Canada.

Archbishop-designate Cyr had been serving as Bishop of Valleyfield.

Cardinal Noè Died

Virgilio Cardinal Noè, President Emeritus of the Fabric of St. Peter, has died.

He was 89 years old and had served as a priest for 66 years. He had also served as a bishop for 29 years.

Last month was the 20th anniversary of his elevation to cardinal.

May he rest in peace.

Jordy named Saint-Claude Bishop

Bishop Vincent Alexandre Édouard Élie Jordy was named Bishop of Saint-Claude, France.

The diocese had been vacant since then-Bishop Jean Marie Henri Legrez, O.P. was named Archbishop of Albi (-Castres-Lavaur) in February 2011.

Bishop Jordy had been serving as Auxiliary Bishop of Strasbourg.

Cardinal Świątek Died

Kazimierz Cardinal Świątek, Archbishop Emeritus of Minsk-Mohilev, Belarus, has died.

He was 96 years old and had served as a priest for 72 years. He had also served as a bishop for 20 years and as a cardinal for 16 years.

May he rest in peace.

With his death, the College of Cardinals has 196 members with 114 of those eligible to vote should a conclave be needed.

The diocese had been vacant since the death of Bishop Jaime Prieto Amaya in August 2010.

Archbishop-designate Molina Palma had been serving as Bishop of Quiché.

Gordon named Bridgetown and Kingstown Bishop

Bishop-elect Charles Jason Gordon was named Bishop of Bridgetown, Barbados, Antilles and Bishop of Kingstown, Saint Vincent and Grenadines, Antilles.

Bridgetown had been vacant since the retirement of Bishop Malcolm Patrick Galt, C.S.Sp. in May 2005.

Kingstown had been vacant since then-Bishop Robert Rivas, O.P. was named Coadjutor Archbishop of Castries, Saint Lucia in July 2007.

In addition, the Metropolitan of the Kingstown was changed from Castries, Saint Lucia to Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

Bishop Ruffinoni had been serving as Coadjutor Bishop of the same diocese.
