The post had been vacant since Archbishop Luciano Russo was named Apostolic Nuncio to Panama in August 2020.
Archbishop Vayalunkal had been serving as Apostolic Nuncio to Papua New Guinea and Apostolic Nuncio to Solomon Islands.
