Archbishop-designate Reinhard Marx was named Archbishop of München und Freising {Munich}, Germany. The archdiocese had been vacant since the retirement fo Friedrich Cardinal Wetter in February 2007. Archbishop-designate Marx had been serving as Bishop of Trier.

Urbina Ortega named Villavicencio Archbishop

Archbishop-designate Oscar Urbina Ortega was named Archbishop of Villavicencio, Colombia. The archdiocese had been vacant since Archbishop José Octavio Ruiz Arenas was named Vice President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America in May 2007. Archbishop-designate Urbina Ortega had been serving as Bishop of Cúcuta.

Lupi named Savona-Noli Bishop

Bishop-elect Vittorio Lupi was named Bishop of Savona-Noli, Italy. The diocese had been vacant since the resignation of Bishop Domenico Calcagno in July 2007.

Cooney retired, Corriveau named Nelson Bishop

Bishop Eugene Jerome Cooney retired and Bishop-elect John Corriveau, O.F.M. Cap. was named Bishop of Nelson, British Columbia, Canada.

Bishop Rochus Josef Tatamai, M.S.C. was named Bishop of Bereina, Papua New Guinea. The diocese had been vacant since then-Bishop John Ribat, M.S.C. was named Coadjutor Archbishop of Port Moresby in April 2007. Bishop Tatamai had been serving as an Auxiliary Bishop of Kerema.

Nowacki named Nuncio to Nicaragua

Archbishop Henryk Józef Nowacki was named Apostolic Nuncio to Nicaragua. The post had been vacant since Archbishop Jean-Paul Aimé Gobel was named Apostolic Nuncio to Iran in October 2007. Archbishop Nowacki had been serving as Apostolic Nuncio to Slovakia.

Tebartz-van Elst named Limburg Bishop

Bishop Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst was named Bishop of Limburg, Germany. The diocese had been vacant since Bishop Franz Kamphaus retired in February 2007. Bishop Tebartz-van Elst had been serving as an Auxiliary Bishop of Münster.

Bishop François Gourguillon, Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus of Reims, France, has died. He was 79 years old and had served as a priest for almost 52 years and served as a bishop for 15 years. May he rest in peace.

Egbebo named Bomadi Auxiliary

Bishop-elect Hyacinth Oroko Egbebo, M.S.P. was named Auxiliary Bishop of Bomadi, Nigeria and titular bishop of Lacubaza.

He was 77 years old and had served as a priest for almost 50 years. He served as a bishop for 37 years and as a cardinal for just over 4 years. May he rest in peace.
