The posts had been vacant since Archbishop Giuseppe Bertello was named President of the Governatorate of Vatican City State in October 2011.

Bertello named Nuncio to Italy and to San Marino
Archbishop Giuseppe Bertello was named Apostolic Nuncio to Italy and to San Marino. Those posts were previously held by Archbishop Paolo Romeo who was named Archbishop of Palermo in December 2006. Archbishop Bertello had been serving as Apostolic Nuncio to Mexico.
