Today Pope Francis indicated that he intends to create 21 new Cardinals on 7 December 2024. Here is the list:

Ordoñez Sigcho named Quito Auxiliary

Bishop-elect Ángel Maximiliano Ordoñez Sigcho was named Auxiliary Bishop of Quito, Ecuador and titular bishop of Phelbes.

Rosales Escobar named Guayaquil Auxiliary

Bishop-elect Gustavo Adolfo Rosales Escobar was named Auxiliary Bishop of Guayaquil, Ecuador and titular bishop of Glavinitza.

Kudławiec named Duale Bishop

Bishop-elect Krzysztof Kudławiec was named Bishop of Daule, Ecuador.

Piccioli resigned as Daule Bishop

Bishop Giovanni Battista Piccioli resigned as Bishop of Daule, Ecuador, having never been installed.

Daule and Santa Elena erected; Piccioli and Minda Chalá named Bishops

The Diocese of Daule and the Diocese of Santa Elena were erected with territory taken from the Archdiocese of Guayaquil, Ecuador and becoming suffragans of it.

Bishop Giovanni Battista Piccioli was named Bishop of Daule.

Bishop Guido Iván Minda Chalá was named Bishop of Santa Elena.

Both of them had been serving as Auxiliary Bishops of Guayaquil.

Núñez Villacís named Tulcán Bishop

Bishop-elect Luis Bernardino Núñez Villacís was named Bishop of Tulcán, Ecuador.

The diocese had been vacant since the death of Bishop Fausto Feliciano Gaibor García in June 2021.

Arellano Fernández retired, Crameri named Esmeraldas Vicar Apostolic

Bishop Eugenio Arellano Fernández, M.C.C.I. retired and Bishop Antonio Crameri, S.S.C. was named Vicar Apostolic of Esmeraldas, Ecuador.

Bishop Crameri had been serving as Auxiliary Bishop of Guayaquil.

Parrilla Díaz retired as Riobamba Bishop

Bishop Julio Parrilla Díaz retired as Bishop of Riobamba, Ecuador.

In addition, Bishop-elect Gerardo Miguel Nieves Loja resigned as Coadjutor Bishop-Elect of the same diocese.

Castillo Villacrés named Zamora en Ecuador Vicar Apostolic

Bishop-elect Jaime Oswaldo Castillo Villacrés was named Vicar Apostolic of Zamora en Ecuador.

The Vicariate had been vacant since Bishop Walter Jehová Heras Segarra, O.F.M. was named Bishop of Loja in October 2019.

Cardinal Vela Chiriboga Died

Raúl Eduardo Cardinal Vela Chiriboga, Archbishop Emeritus of Quito, Ecuador, has died.

He was 86 years old and would have celebrated 10 years as a cardinal next week. He served as a bishop for 48 years and as a priest for 63 years.

May he rest in peace.

Saeteros Sierra named Portoviejo Auxiliary

Bishop-elect Vicente Horacio Saeteros Sierra was named Auxiliary Bishop of Portoviejo, Ecuador and titular bishop of Rusuccuru.

De la Torre Altamirano named Quito Auxiliary

Bishop-elect David Israel De la Torre Altamirano, SS.CC. was named Auxiliary Bishop of Quito, Ecuador and titular bishop of Bagai.

Castillo Pino named Portoviejo Archbishop

Archbishop-designate Eduardo José Castillo Pino was named Archbishop of Portoviejo, Ecuador.

The archdiocese had been vacant since the resignation of Archbishop Lorenzo Voltolini Esti in September 2018.

Archbishop-designate Castillo Pino had been serving as Apostolic Administrator of the same archdiocese.

Trávez Trávez retired, Espinoza Mateus named Quito Archbishop

Archbishop Fausto Gabriel Trávez Trávez, O.F.M. retired and Archbishop-designate Alfredo José Espinoza Mateus, S.D.B. was named Archbishop of Quito, Ecuador.

Archbishop-designate Espinoza Mateus had been serving as Bishop of Loja.

Maggi resigned as Ibarra Bishop

Bishop Valter Dario Maggi resigned as Bishop of Ibarra, Ecuador.

Torres Asanza named Guaranda Bishop

Bishop Hermenegildo José Torres Asanza was named Bishop of Guaranda, Ecuador.

The diocese had been vacant since Bishop Skiper Bladimir Yáñez Calvachi was named Bishop of Babahoyo in March 2018.

Bishop Torres Asanza has been serving as Auxiliary Bishop of Machala.

Voltolini Esti resigned as Portoviejo Archbishop

Archbishop Lorenzo Voltolini Esti resigned as Archbishop of Portoviejo, Ecuador.

Yáñez Calvachi named Babahoyo Bishop

Bishop Skiper Bladimir Yáñez Calvachi was named Bishop of Babahoyo, Ecuador.

The diocese had been vacant since then-Bishop Marcos Aurelio Pérez Caicedo was named Archbishop of Cuenca in June 2016.

Bishop Yáñez Calvachi had been serving as Bishop of Guaranda.
