Bishop Juan Alfredo Arzube, Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus of Los Angeles, California, USA, has died. He was 89 years old and had served as a priest for 53 years and as a bishop for 36 years. May he rest in peace.

Archbishop-designate Richard Anthony Burke, S.P.S. was named Archbishop of Benin City, Nigeria. The archdiocese had been vacant since the retirement of Archbishop Patrick Ebosele Ekpu in November 2006. Archbishop-designate Burke had been serving as Bishop of Warri.

Aloísio Leo Arlindo Cardinal Lorscheider, O.F.M., Archbishop Emeritus of Aparecida, Sao Paulo, Brazil, has died. He was 83 years old and had served as a priest for 59 years. He had also served as a bishop for 45 years and as a cardinal for 31 years. May he rest in peace.

A New Blog

This does not relate directly to the Catholic-Hierarchy website, but many of ya'll may still find it interesting. I have begun a new blog which I will use for items which don't seem appropriate for this blog.

John Patrick Cardinal Foley was named Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. He had been serving as Pro-Grand Master of the same order.

Lazzarotto named Australia Nuncio

Archbishop Giuseppe Lazzarotto was named Apostolic Nuncio to Australia. The post had been vacant since the death of Archbishop Ambrose Battista De Paoli in October 2007. Archbishop Lazzarotto had been serving as Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland

Kocherry named Zimbabwe Nuncio

Archbishop George Kocherry was named Apostolic Nuncio to Zimbabwe. The post had been vacant since Archbishop Edward Joseph Adams was named Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines in September 2007. Archbishop Kocherry had been serving as Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana.

Lechowicz named Tarnów Auxiliary

Bishop Sebastião Assis de Figueiredo, O.F.M., Bishop of Guiratinga, Mato Grosso, Brazil, has died. he was 58 years old and had been serving as a bishop for 6 years. Just two days before his death he celebrated 31 years as a priest. May he rest in peace.

Houndékon named Abomey Bishop

Bishop-elect Eugène Cyrille Houndékon was named Bishop of Abomey, Benin. The diocese had been vacant since Bishop René-Marie Ehuzu, C.I.M. was named Bishop of Porto Novo in February 2007.

He was 97 years old - making him the oldest cardinal and in the top dozen oldest bishops at his death. He served as a priest for 70 years, as a bishop for 24 years, and as a cardinal for 22 years. May he rest in peace.

Lazzaris named Balsas Bishop

Bishop-elect Enemésio Ângelo Lazzaris, F.D.P. was named Bishop of Balsas, Maranho, Brazil. The diocese had been vacant since the death of Bishop Gianfranco Masserdotti, M.C.C.I. in September 2006.
