Bishop Marcelino Hernández Rodríguez was named Bishop of Orizaba, México. The diocese had been vacant since April 2007 when then-Bishop Hipólito Reyes Larios was named Archbishop of Jalapa (Xalapa). Bishop Hernández Rodríguez had been serving as an Auxiliary Bishop of México.

Ferraro retired, Montenegro named Agrigento Archbishop

Archbishop Carmelo Ferraro retired and Archbishop-designate Francesco Montenegro was named Archbishop of Agrigento, Italy. Archbishop-designate Montenegro had been serving as an Auxiliary Bishop of Messina-Lipari-Santa Lucia del Mela.

Robles Cota retired, Watty Urquidi named Tepic Bishop

Bishop Alfonso Humberto Robles Cota retired and Bishop Ricardo Watty Urquidi, M.Sp.S. was named Bishop of Tepic, Nayarit, México. Bishop Watty Urquidi had been serving as Bishop of Nuevo Laredo.

Bishop Carrière Died

Bishop Paul-Louis Carrière, Bishop Emeritus of Laval, France, has died. He was 99 years old and had served as a priest for 76 years and as a bishop for 39 years. May he rest in peace.

Archbishop Marijan Oblak, Archbishop Emeritus of Zadar (Zara), Croatia, has died. He was 88 years old and had served as a priest for 62 years and a bishop for 49 years. May he rest in peace.

Felix retired, Rivas succeeded as Castries Archbishop

Archbishop Kelvin Edward Felix retired and Archbishop Robert Rivas, O.P. succeeded as Archbishop of Castries, Saint Lucia, Antilles. Archbishop Rivas had been serving as Coadjutor Archbishop of the same archdiocese.

Slovakia (Latin Rite) Reorganization

Following the reorganization of the Byzantine rite jurisdictions of Slovakia a fortnight ago, today the Latin rite jurisdictions were adjusted as follows:

The Archdiocese of Bratislava-Trnava was split into the Archdiocese of Bratislava (which becomes the Metropolitan) and the Archdiocese of Trnava. The ordinaries are Archbishop-designate Stanislav Zvolenský and Archbishop Ján Sokol, respectively.

The new Diocese of Žilina was created with territory taken from Banská Bystrica and Nitra with Bishop Tomáš Gális as its first ordinary.

González González and Gutiérrez Valencia named Guadalajara Auxiliaries

Bishop-elect José Francisco González González and Bishop-elect Juan Humberto Gutiérrez Valencia were named Auxiliary Bishops of Guadalajara, Jalisco, México and titular bishops of Feradi Maius and Iunca in Byzacena, respectively.

Cassari named Croatia Nuncio

Archbishop Mario Roberto Cassari was named Apostolic Nuncio to Croatia. The post had been vacant since Archbishop Francisco-Javier Lozano was named Apostolic Nuncio to Romania in December 2007. Archbishop Cassari had been serving as Apostolic Nuncio to Côte d’Ivoire.
