Cardinal Mayer Died

Paul Augustin Cardinal Mayer, O.S.B., President Emeritus of the Pontifical Commission “Ecclesia Dei”, has died.

He was almost 99 years old and the most senior Cardinal by age. He had served as a priest for 74 years, as a bishop for 38 years, and as a cardinal for almost 25 years.

May he rest in peace.

The archdiocese had been vacant since the resignation of Archbishop Kevin John Patrick McDonald in December 2009.

Archbishop Smith had been serving as Archbishop of Cardiff, Wales.
