Important Technology Test

Howdy,

I've finished a draft version of a change to the page design and I was hoping to get a little bit of feedback. The changes are:

  • Drop-Down menu's have a slightly larger font
  • a Google-based site search to the right of the menus
  • a Google-based automated page translation gadget added just below that

Please provide any feedback through the regular form on the site.

---

Just a quick update to let ya'll know that the changes are now being rolled out. Only new/refreshed pages will have the new format for now - but I normally do a site refresh around the first of the year.

Thanks again!

Technical Note and the Upcoming Week

I wanted to remind folks that Day Saving Time in Europe ended last night - but it doesn't end in the US until next weekend. The result is that announcements will be made an hour later (US time) for the next week - meaning that I may not be able to post an update before I go to work in the morning.

The other item is you may have noticed there was yet another version change of the software - now at v2.5.6. This provides a fix of a long standing bug on diocese pages relating to the list of past ordinaries. If an ordinary's start date was a partial date (i.e., missing month and/or day) then the next ordinary might not appear on the list. That bug (hopefully) is finally fixed.

A refresh of the diocese pages is now posted to the site.

Version 2.5.5 and Recent Additions

Ya'll may have noticed yet another version change - now up to version 2.5.5 - over the weekend. This time the changes were purely internal in nature - a reworking of the code which produces the group section of a bishop's page. However, the performance difference is rather dramatic. The last time I did a full refresh of the bishop pages was in January and it took roughly 17 hours. I did a full refresh again last night and despite have almost 2,000 more bishops the process was done in under 6 hours.

Over the summer lull I spent much of the time adding historical cardinals to the databases. This includes all the Cardinals in the Consistories starting in 1644 and Conclaves starting from 1676.

Technical Note and the Summer Lull

First, I wanted to let ya'll know that I've finally finished processing a new source Les évêques et les archevêques de France depuis 1682 jusqu'à 1801. The effect is that my lists of French bishops for the 18th century is now fairly complete - adding several hundred new entries.

Secondly, ya'll have probably noticed the annual summer slow down (or lull). This is quite normal and usually lasts until at least mid-September. The good news on that front is that Cardinal Re (Prefect, Congregation of Bishops) met with the Holy Father last Friday. Hopefully that means that at least some appointments are moving forward.

There is also still one large vacancy in the College of Cardinals, namely the Cardinal-Bishop of Palestrina, which has been open since the death of Cardinal Gantin in mid-May. The delay is understandable since just 3 days before Pope Benedict XVI had named the new Cardinal-Bishop of Frascati (Cardinal Bertone following the death of Cardinal López Trujillo).

and 10,000,000 visits later

The Main Website reached a milestone early this morning - the 10 millionth visit.

The site began long ago, you can find a history and timeline in an earlier post.

Until the site got its own domain - on the Feast of Blessed Damien de Veuster (10 May 2002) no logs and very few stats were available. On that first day, there were 45 visits - viewing 495 pages.

Over the years the site has greatly expanded in content and in users. For example, yesterday there were over 6,000 visits looking at over 38,000 pages. Nearly 1,000 people belong to the groups that receive emails about updates.

And today, the total number of visits passed 10 million. During those visits, folks viewed 68 million pages. Not bad for 6.20 years of service :-)

All I can say is Thank You!

Cardinals by Seniority

Ya'll may have noticed that yet another new version was released today. Its a fairly small change - adding Cardinals by Seniority pages. Because there are so many Cardinals, it is split into 3 segments, by class of Cardinal.
For now I've adjusted my lists to conform to the Annuario Pontificio 2008 (with the exception of events that have occurred since it was published).

There are still a couple of entries which I am investigating, namely:

  • Cardinal Darmaatmadja (69) is before Cardinal Ortega y Alamino (68). Although coverage at the time of their consistory indicate that Ortega y Alamino was before Darmaatmadja.
  • Cardinal Sepe (99) is listed between Cardinals Honoré (123) and Scola (124). Normally Cardinals can ask to move from Cardinal-Deacon to Cardinal-Priest after 10 years in the College and retain their seniority. Its not clear if one elevated before the 10 years should also retain their seniority. If he retained his seniority he would be at #99.
