Cardinals!!! (updated 4 Nov 2024)

Today Pope Francis indicated that he intends to create 21 new Cardinals on 7 December 2024. Here is the list:

  • On 12 October, it was announced that the date was changed to 7 December (from 8 December).
    On 4 November, Abp Battaglia was added to the list.

    Osaka and Takamatsu combined to Osaka-Takamatsu

    The archdiocese of Osaka and the diocese of Takamatsu were combined to form the Archdiocese of Osaka-Takamatsu, Japan.

    The diocese of Takamatsu was vacant.

    The archdiocese of Osaka was being led by Thomas Aquino Manyo Cardinal Maeda with Bishop Paul Toshihiro Sakai as an Auxiliary; both are transferred to the new jurisdiction.

    Boccardi named Japan Nuncio

    Archbishop Leo Boccardi was named Apostolic Nuncio to Japan.

    The post had been vacant since the death of Archbishop Joseph Chennoth in September 2020.

    Archbishop Boccardi had been serving as Apostolic Nuncio to Iran.

    14 New Cardinals Named

    This morning the Holy Father announced 14 new Cardinals will be created on 29 June 2018.

    To Be Created Cardinal:
    Count: 11; Average Age: 68.6

    To Be Created Cardinal (Non-Voting):
    Count: 3; Average Age: 82.6

    With the addition of the 14 new Cardinals on 29 June 2018, there will be 227 members total with 125 of those having the right to vote. Assuming no Cardinal elector deaths, the number of electors will return to the theoretical maximum of 120 on 1 Aug 2019.

    Archbishop Konrad Krajewski, Papal Almoner, will become the second youngest Cardinal at age 54. Dieudonné Cardinal Nzapalainga, C.S.Sp., Archbishop of Bangui, Central African Republic, will remain the youngest at 51.

    Shirahama named Hiroshima Bishop

    Bishop-elect Alexis Mitsuru Shirahama, P.S.S. was named Bishop of Hiroshima, Japan.

    The diocese had been vacant since then-Bishop Thomas Aquino Manyo Maeda was named Archbishop of Osaka in August 2014.

    On the same day, Bishop Joseph Atsumi Misue, Emeritus of Hiroshima, died. He had served as a priest for 54 years and as a bishop for 31 years. May he rest in peace.
