Gielen named Christchurch Bishop

Bishop Michael Andrew Gielen was named Bishop of Christchurch, New Zealand.

The diocese had been vacant since then-Bishop Paul Gerard Martin, S.M. was named Coadjutor Archbishop of Wellington in January 2021.

Bishop Gielen had been serving as Auxiliary Bishop of Auckland.

Archbishop Novatus Rugambwa was named Apostolic Nuncio to New Zealand and Apostolic Delegate to Pacific Oceania.

The posts had been vacant since Archbishop Martin Krebs was named Apostolic Nuncio to Uruguay in June 2018.

Archbishop Rugambwa had been serving as Apostolic Nuncio to Honduras.

Consistory to Create New Cardinals, 2015 (now with Names!)

The consistory had been announced on 11 Dec 2014 to be held on 14 Feb 2015. This will be the second consistory to create new cardinals by Pope Francis. The following will be added to the College of Cardinals at that time: 15 Cardinal Electors:

Balvo named Keyna Nuncio

Archbishop Charles Daniel Balvo was named Apostolic Nuncio to Kenya.

The post had been vacant since Archbishop Alain Paul Charles Lebeaupin was named Apostolic Nuncio to European Union in June 2012.

Archbishop Balvo had been serving as Apostolic Nuncio to New Zealand and to several other countries in the Pacific (Oceania) area.

Bishop Loft Died

Bishop Gerard Francis Loft, S. M., Bishop Emeritus of Auki, Solomon Islands, has died. He was 73 years old and had served as a priest for 48 years and as a bishop for 23 years. May he rest in peace.
